Snapshots and portraits depicting Native Americans of New Mexico and perhaps other Southwestern U.S. locations; snapshots of formal views of Albuquerque, Taos Pueblo, Isleta Pueblo, buttes, landscapes and other topics in New Mexico and perhaps elsewhere; Compton family portraits and snapshots. Alonzo E. Compton, his wife Nola Reed Compton and their daughter Margaret (Martha) Compton are depicted throughout. Subject matter of nitrate negatives duplicates that of prints: Native Americans, miscellaneous landscapes and pueblo views. Also includes miscellaneous ephemera and manuscripts: a typescript obituary; another obituary printed in a newspaper; handbills for Compton Studio; a business card; a memoir, "A trip from Illinois to Albuquerque by automobile" by Margaret; and automobile ownership papers.

Alonzo Edmund Compton: born 1867 in Belmont, Kentucky; studied engineering at University of Valparaiso in Indiana; worked as a surveyor for the U.S. Government Land Office in New Mexico; operated Compton Studio, a photography studio in Albuquerque; died 1938 in Effingham, Illinois.
